Bastille Day This Week
It’s that time of the year again. On July 14th, it’s French National Day aka Bastille Day. The holiday celebrates the storming of the Bastille fortress on July 14th, 1789. In other words, it’s an amazing time to go out, drink, and celebrate being French!
In the meantime, this Joe Dassin song should be on heavy rotation on your iPod this week. It’s about the iconic avenue called Champs-Élysées in Paris, where the largest and oldest military parade takes place annually to celebrate this glorious day. Careful, hearing this song can make you hum with a happy skip in your step all day.
and here are seven ways to celebrate bastille day in nyc

On the north end there’s skateboarding, and everywhere are actual French people, like, speaking French and smoking Gauloises cigarettes. Along Smith and down the side streets, vendors sell booze (pastis, Lillet, sangria, beer) and food (merguez sandwiches, etc.); tables are set up everywhere under big umbrellas. But there’s also tons of bar-hopping, and in Bar Tabac at 3 p.m., you can’t make it from the front to the back in less than 15 minutes. At the intersection of Dean and Smith, the Baby Blue Orchids play jazz and swing; the dancing gets sloppier as the day goes on….
… It was so much more fun than the Fourth of July. Vive la France!
